Tom VorjohaNEnvironmental & Recycling - Magic Show!
PURPOSE: Use magic to illustrate the responsibilities that we have as “stewards of the earth.” This includes facts about animals, water, action & reaction, landfills, recycling, working together and using our knowledge proactively to help our community and environment.
GENERAL OUTLINE OF SHOW: ¨ Introduction Sets the mood to be amazed, amused, and educated all at the same time. ¨ Vanishing silk & reappearance in child’s sleeve This opening effect is performed to music and the silk handkerchief vanishes and then is found up the sleeve of an unsuspecting volunteer. This is referenced later during the show as a lesson, “Just because you don’t know it’s there, doesn’t mean it’s not there.” ¨ Animals How we treat our environment is effecting all living things. Some facts about species dying off and how this will continue is related during two tricks that use “stuffed” animals in a fun & memorable way. One is an appearance by “Roadkill” the raccoon, and the other is a card effect performed by “Jake” the trained snake. ¨ Water While a glass of water floats, we deliver a deluge of facts about water and its importance to our life and environment. ¨ Garbage At the peak of the show, we hammer home some facts about the amount of garbage we generate and what can be done to Recycle, Reuse, and Reduce our waste. Tricks include a lesson using the words “RECYCLE – REUSE – REDUCE” that gets everyone to remember what they need to do. There is also a funny aside where a child is turned into a garbage can! ¨ “It’s What’s Inside” Using an illusion to illustrate that the magic happens inside the box, we draw the parallel to the fact that students need to share their knowledge to help at their home and in their community. ¨ Working Together A trick is used to illustrate the power behind groups coming together for a cause…the kids are amazed at a single swinging bell as they concentrate. ¨ The Lorax This classic story is told and we use magic to illustrate the tale of the Lorax. The kids are captivated by this point in the show as they can draw the parallel to our own society and how we need to care for our world. ¨ Head Shrinking To end the show, we like to use a principal or key figure from the school to have the kids watch their head shrink in wide-eyed gasps. We end the performance by telling the kids to instead use their knowledge to make their heads grow and find ways to help their school and community. |
